How To Download and Play the Official Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs Data Pack in Minecraft Java

The Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update has been delayed and split into two parts (1.17 and 1.18). As such players will no longer be able to play the newest cave or cliffs generation in the latest snapshots, instead they will have to download the 1.17 experimental data pack and this blog will show yo how to do that.

Why Has Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs Update Been Delayed?

Mojang, the developers of Minecraft have decided to delay the Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update by splitting it into two parts. The Summer update (1.17) will focus on the new mobs, blocks and vegetation. The Holidays update (1.18) will focus on the cave biome generation, addition of mountains, world height and depth increase.

Mojang have decided to delay the Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update for a few reasons:

  • Mojang do not want to put their developers under a time crunch, therefore they do not want comprimise on the quality of the update.
  • The coronavirus pandemic has been hard on everyone and they want to make sure their developers are happy when they are working on the new update.
  • Minecraft 1.17 is a very ambitious update, Mojang are facing technical challenges because it changes the way that terrain is generated in Minecraft and it will also have a immense impact on performance (they need more time to optimise the update so that players can update their old worlds).
